THE ROMANCE READING ROOM

Spicy book club ideas:
an evening in Evie and Tristan’s world.

By Elira Hope

A spicy book club can be a very good excuse for a night in: a book worth talking about, something pink in your glass and a playlist that does not mind a little conversation over the top. Here is a simple evening plan built around Ideally Positioned.

Before the evening: choose the book together

Send everyone the free first chapter and the spoiler-free reading guide. This is adult romance with explicit consensual sexual content and heavier themes, including coercive control, blackmail, assault, addiction and violence. Give your group room to decide whether it suits them before setting a reading date.

Agree whether everyone will finish the novel. Keep the whole-book questions closed until the group is ready for spoilers. If some readers have only tried the sample, discuss first impressions and save the later plot for another meeting.

A relaxed 90-minute plan

  1. First 15 minutes: settle in, pour a drink and share one spoiler-free first impression.
  2. Next 30 minutes: talk about Evie, Tristan, the attraction and the contrast between their working lives.
  3. Next 25 minutes: choose three questions from the whole-book discussion guide, if everyone has finished.
  4. Final 20 minutes: compare favourite moments, choose your next read and let the playlist take over.

Three conversations to begin with

What draws you to a romance with instant attraction? How does Evie’s professional world shape your first impression of her? What do you want from a romantic hero beyond good looks? These opening questions leave plenty of room for different answers without revealing the ending.

Serve The Open House

For one cocktail, use 45 ml vanilla vodka, 20 ml Chambord, 25 ml cranberry juice and 15 ml fresh lime juice. Shake with ice, strain into a chilled coupe with a half sugar rim, and garnish with three raspberries. You can find the full Open House recipe in the reader extras.

For a simple alcohol-free alternative, combine cranberry juice and lime with soda water over ice, then add raspberries. Put snacks and water within reach so everyone can settle in comfortably.

Put on My Writing playlist

The Ideally Positioned writing playlist gives the evening its music. Keep it low while you discuss the book, then turn it up afterwards. A black tablecloth, hot-pink napkins and a stack of books are quite enough decoration; you do not need to turn your lounge into an open home.

Let the discussion stay personal by choice

Readers can talk about the characters without sharing their own intimate experiences. Let anyone pass on a question, and make space for disagreement about a scene or a decision. The best book club conversation leaves everyone with something new to think about.
